The Undying Monster 1942

Posted by [info]dfordoom in [info]cult_movie on 2008.08.20 at 20:42
The release of three John Brahm movies in the Fox Horror Classics Collection caused quite a bit of excitement a couple of years ago. Brahm, born in Germany in 1893, was hailed as one of the great forgotten horror auteurs. Having now seen two of the three films included in the set, my own feeling is that Brahm has been highly overrated.

The Undying Monster, made at 20th Century Fox in 1942, is very much a B-movie. Of course there are B-movies and B-movies, but if you’re expecting something of the quality of Val Lewton’s RKO horror films you’re going to be very disappointed. It has reasonably production values, and Lucien Ballard’s cinematography is impressively Expressionist. The weaknesses, as in Hangover Square, are the script and the acting. The script is corny and obvious, and contrived. The acting is unfortunately all too reminiscent of that in the Universal horror movies of this period, with totally unnecessary and annoying attempts at providing comic relief.

The Hammond family, or at least the last surviving members of this ancient family, live in one of the oldest inhabited houses in England. There is a curse on the family, the curse of the Hammond monster. When the last male member of the family is found on a ledge below a cliff-top, along with an unconscious young woman, and both show signs of having been attacked by a large creature of unknown species, it seems the curse has struck again.

A scientific officer and his female assistant are sent by Scotland Yard to investigate these strange events. There’s a mysterious butler who knows more than he admits to, and there’s the family doctor, who also appears to know more than he’s prepared to reveal. The plot is no worse than your typical horror B-movie plot, but it fails to develop the necessary dramatic tension. And while Brahm has a good visual sense, and there’s an abundance of fog and shadows, the atmosphere of menace and foreboding doesn’t quite come off.

That’s not to say The Undying Monster isn’t worth seeing, If you treat it as just another 1940s American horror B-film, and if you enjoy that type of movie, then it’s entertaining enough. Just don’t expect a neglected masterpiece.

I have to admit, my friend gave me the link to this community and didn't tell me anything about it...

and as soon as I saw the banner from A Clockwork Orange I knew that I had to join.

I love that film, and most all "cult-like" films beyond all. Its great to have a community like this!

nike run

Posted by [info]limmenel in [info]chicagochat on 2008.08.19 at 21:56
So, Nike has a big 10k run coming up at the end of the month... it's happening in select cities all over the world, and Chicago is one of them.

I'll be honest: I don't want to run. I'm not athletic at all. But I do want to attend the post-run entertainment, which is a concert by the band Fall Out Boy.

So, are any of you planning to do the run? Do you know someone who is? Do you/they want to sell their ticket to the show that evening, by any chance? I'm willing to pay the full $35 for it (which is the cost of participating in the race).

(Otherwise, does anyone know if it's possible to register for the race and then, y'know, not race? I'd run if I could, but... yeah.)

Halloween?

Posted by [info]milfoil_madness in [info]tallchicksrock on 2008.08.19 at 20:53
I know it's really early for this, but my favorite holiday is Halloween, so I start thinking about it at the beginning of the school year. I love making costumes for my friends and I.

What I want to know is...

Have you ladies ever had a Halloween costume that made light of your tallness? (Amazon, superhero, etc.) I feel like I can never go to Halloween parties dressed as, say, a fairy- people will just comment on how non-petite and fairylike I am! (On that note, however, I've never REALLY wanted to dress up as a fairy, so, no harm done there.)

So! What have been your most successful tall-girl halloween costumes?

Cheapish Veterinary Care?

my kitty had an accident with the kitchen counter top when he got scared, and his lip became detached from his gums... I thought i should leave it alone, but now he keeps shivering and is sleeping A LOT more than usual. He still eats, so it cant be too bad, but it LOOKS horrible.

Please keep in mind that i am located in Lakeview, 3 blocks from Wrigley. and do not have a vehicle, so the less i have to pay for a cab ride the better... OR, if you could give me advice on how to treat him or think i should just leave it alone...

I've been lurking around here for a long time but have never gotten to posting something up yet as an introduction. I really have enjoyed seeing art from everyone so far.

I mostly consider myself an anime type artist. I work with traditional mediums only so far. Even though my style is mostly anime/manga, I do draw/paint etc. in other styles.

Thought it was time that I made an introduction here and let all artists know that it's wonderful seeing your work.

Just a couple of pieces as introduction )
Thanks!

Well, thanks to this community I'm only a week away from my move to Chicago and I feel much more confident about arranging for all the incidentals, so thanks! I have a few questions related to food:

Where I can find a grocery store or gourmet/speciality food store that has a well stocked selection of things like exotic cheeses, fresh bread/fresh pastas, bulk olives, caviar, etc. I know there are a few Whole Foods floating around. Any other suggestions where I could find such things?

Also, where I would be more likely to find grocery stores that will be more likely to consistently carry kosher meat? I found a bunch of listings for kosher butchers, but I hate having to make an extra trip if I'm already going to go out grocery shopping. Thanks!

EDIT: I have yet another question. Those of you who have ever had anything delivered from the Ikea in Bolingbrook, how much did they charge?
